After a mixed season, Barcelona are set for a busy summer transfer window. Although the Blaugrana have already been crowned Spanish champions, the Catalan club were knocked out in the Copa del Rey semi-finals and the Champions League quarter-finals. That's a thin return for a club of Barcelona's stature, and the next transfer window is intended to plug certain gaps in the squad.
Julián Álvarez set to stay in Madrid
Barcelona absolutely must sign a number 9 to make up for the departure of Robert Lewandowski. To replace the Polish giant, the club had made Julián Álvarez their top target. The Atlético Madrid centre-forward would fit perfectly into Hansi Flick's plans, and the German manager sees him as the ideal player for Barcelona. However, the Argentine — under contract with Atlético Madrid until June 2030 — looks set to remain in the Spanish capital this summer…
What about Bastoni?
Another position has the full attention of Barcelona's hierarchy: centre-back. The Blaugrana suffered from too much inconsistency in this area of the pitch this season. To raise the level of their defence, Barcelona had identified Alessandro Bastoni (Inter Milan) as a target. While the player was keen on the idea of joining the Catalan side, he is now reportedly having doubts about the project's solidity. This deal, too, may well be coming off the rails.
